In that representation, Joel has counseled numerous employers regarding matters which are critical for their management of personnel. This has included advice and counsel regarding employment discrimination and wrongful discharge issues, employee benefits, federal civil rights, covenants not to compete, labor grievances, unemployment insurance and wage/hour issues. Joel has also helped clients when drafting personnel policies and procedures (including anti-harassment in the workplace), employment contracts, compensation agreements, employee severance/layoff agreements and out-of-court settlements.
Joel is also experienced in mediation and arbitration matters. He has been trained by and served as a mediator for TRY, Inc., Mediation Center in Eau Claire. He has also served as an early neutral evaluator for cases filed with the federal court in Madison. In addition, Joel recently received Certified Civil Arbitration Training from the Minnesota Bar Association. This experience has benefitted clients when they became involved in cases using alternative dispute resolution methods rather than formal litigation before the courts or administrative agencies.
Joel is a member of the Eau Claire County Bar Association and over the years has regularly volunteered to provide free legal assistance to the community as part of the County Bar's Free Legal Clinic. Joel has also spoken to many groups about ongoing developments and trends that are important to know in labor and employment regulation.
His undergraduate degree is from St. Olaf College
in Northfield, Minnesota. His degree in law is from the
Hamline University School of Law located in
St. Paul, Minnesota. Joel is licensed to practice law
in both Wisconsin and Minnesota.
