Don is originally from Kenosha, Wisconsin, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in 1973. Don received his law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1975.

Don and his wife, Patricia, have been residents of Eau Claire since 1976. Don prosecuted criminal cases as an Assistant District Attorney for Eau Claire County during 1976 and entered private civil practice in 1977.

Don is a member of the Eau Claire County Bar Association (past president) and the State Bar of Wisconsin.

Don is currently on the Board of Directors of the Bolton Refuge House and on the Board of the Chippewa Valley Museum Foundation. Previously, Don has served on the LE Phillips Board of Library Trustees (past president), the City of Eau Claire Board of Zoning Appeals (past president), the Community Table (past president), the Eau Claire County Guidance Clinic (past president), Regis High School - School Board (past president), Regis High School Foundation (past president), and the Salvation Army local Board of Directors.
